The rising Mississippi River covered the Buffalo Shores spot reserved for this year's Polar Plunge fundraiser for Special Olympics. So Long Grove firefighters created an alternative at Scott Park Saturday, where Lancer football and girls' soccer players joined sheriff's deputies, state troopers and a couple dozen others taking the plunge for Special Olympics. Temps in the mid 40s were plenty polar for these plungers, who enjoyed a catered meal at the Whispering Pines pavilion afterwards. NSP photos by Mark Ridolfi.
