How much can be put in a grocery cart in two minutes?
Twelve teams of North Scott residents piled $3,965.64 during their mad dashes through North Scott Foods Sunday, amassing three pick-up truck loads of food for the North Scott food pantry.
“This is truly about community helping community,” pantry volunteer Janalee Keppy told about 40 crammed into the produce section for a group photo.
Keppy said the haul will feed hungry North Scott families into 2020.
The annual event drew a record number of entrants. Sponsors pledged to cover the cost of each cart, although North Scott Foods manager Andy Lane said he’d cover the biggest tab: $519.64 gathered by North Scott school board members.
Also new this year: A team of high school referees who not only gathered $358.54; they also blew whistles and threw flags at the team of North Scott coaches.
Organizer Scott Case said the annual event has provided $17,330.20 in food for the pantry.
