June 27, 1973: An attempt by cattle rustlers to steal cows from the Harold Kearney farm northwest of Donahue was thwarted thanks for 17-year-old Richard Rank of Bettendorf. Rank spotted the cattle rustlers and attempted to chase them down, but one of the thieves struck him in the head with a rifle as they attempted to escape. Cattle theft had been plaguing Iowa throughout the spring, and it was thought these thieves had planned to kill and butcher a cow and carry the meat away by helicopter. Rank said a similar incident had taken place at his father’s farm near DeWitt.  more

A funeral service for Susan E. Filbrandt, 84, of LeClaire, was held at 3 p.m. Friday, June 23, at First Presbyterian Church, LeClaire. Visitation was two hours prior to the service on Friday at the church. Burial was in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire. McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, assisted the family with arrangements. more
A memorial visitation for Harold John Wente, 91, of Eldridge, formerly of Denver, Iowa, will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, June 30, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Denver. A graveside burial service will follow at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery.  more

Heaven gained an angel on Thursday, June 22, 2023. The light of our life, Karen Kay Van Blaricom, 78, passed away at St. Francis Medical Center. Funeral services in honor of Karen’s life took place on Saturday, June 24, at Weerts Funeral Home. She was laid to rest at Davenport Memorial Park.
