Bob was born on Oct. 29, 1936, in Davenport, the son of Roland and Leane (Woehlk) Westphal. He attended country school in Scott County and was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marlene Gilbert, on Aug. 18, 1956, in Davenport. Together they shared nearly 70 years of marriage, building a life centered on family, farming and friends.
Bob dedicated his entire life to farming on the Westphal Family Century Farm. He took great pride in raising crops, cattle, and hogs, and his strong work ethic and commitment to the land were evident throughout his life. Farming was more than an occupation — it was his passion. He was a member of the Walcott Community Club and Davenport Elks Lodge #298.
Bob enjoyed making countless memories with family and friends at their cabin on the Cedar River. He looked forward each year to the annual June fish fry and 4th of July celebration held at the cabin. An avid fisherman, he also enjoyed homemade grape wine, playing Sheepshead, traveling, taking cruises, and spending the winters in Texas. One of his greatest joys was dancing with Marlene, in their younger years the two could often be found on the dance floor. Above all, Bob treasured his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was known for lovingly teasing and joking with those he cared about most. He also had a special fondness for his beloved cat, Boo, whose companionship brought him comfort and many quiet moments of joy. His quick wit, warm smile, and genuine kindness created lasting memories that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Bob will be dearly missed by his wife, Marlene; two children, Gene (Deb) Westphal of Davenport and Darcy (Brian) Thomas of Davenport; five grandchildren, Mike Swarts, Mikki (Travis) Englund, Dustin Westphal, Austin Thomas and Sarah Thomas; three great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Lincoln of Walcott; a sister-in-law, Vi Westphal of Eldridge; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
