Janet Louise (Scott) Morrell passed away peacefully on Feb. 28, 2024, in Portland, Ore.

Janet was born in Dayton, Ohio, to William and Lorene Scott on New Year’s Eve in 1946.

Janet graduated from Rutland High School, Rutland, Ohio, in 1964. She received a bachelor of arts degree from Ohio University in 1968. Janet later earned a paralegal certificate from Marycrest College.

After graduating from Ohio University, she accepted a job for the Department of the Army in St. Louis. In St. Louis, she met and subsequently married Doug Morrell. After Doug was transferred, they moved to Zweibrucken, Germany. Janet enjoyed traveling around Europe and learning to cook local cuisines. They lived in Germany for nearly five years before moving to Long Grove.

Janet was a teacher at the American Institute of Commerce, before working as a paralegal at Tom Schirman, Jr. Law Office in Eldridge for many years until retirement.

Janet believed in the importance of community and served two terms on the Long Grove City Council. She was active at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge, participating in women’s Bible study groups and teaching Sunday school.  Janet loved to read and belonged to several book clubs. Janet expressed her creativity through quilting and needlepoint.  She never shied away from tackling a new craft or cooking a new cuisine. She patiently taught her daughters to express their creativity as well. Her wide scope of knowledge was frequently tested at community trivia nights.  Cats held a special place in Janet’s heart.  It is hard to remember a time that a cat wasn’t curled up on her lap.

She will be deeply missed by her husband of 53 years, Doug; children, Amy (Geoff) Harker and Hannah (Shea) Morrell; and grandchildren, Samuel Harker and David Harker; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.

Janet was predeceased by her parents, William and Lorene; siblings, George and Charles.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Planned Parenthood or the National Organization of Women. These organizations were meaningful for Janet because they supported opportunities for women, including healthcare and education.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at The Ackerly at Timberland, Tenderly Hospice, and everyone who provided Janet with care these last few months.

Memorial services in Portland and Eldridge to follow.
