Playing an important role in providing emergency services to the Bennett community and surrounding area is the Bennett Ambulance Service, a group of 20 volunteers that handles more than 100 calls a year.

To celebrate the end of the year, the Durant Community School District’s band program will be performing their end of the year pops concert on Wednesday, May 7, at the Durant Band Shell. The free concert will begin at 5 p.m., and will feature musicians from 5th grade to 12th grade.

A public hearing was held on the budget for the fiscal year July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026. The tax levy amount per $1,000 is $13.94. Revenues and other sources total 9.35 million. Expenditures total 12.5 million. The expenditures comprise several capital projects, including the 5th Street Project, the Cedar Street water main replacement, the new fire truck, and the ambulance rebuild. There were no further questions or comments. The hearing closed, and the council approved the budget.

The West Liberty City Council has officially approved its Fiscal Year 25-26 budget. This unanimous approval was done during a special council meeting held 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, after the council was received confirmation that the budget had been balanced.

Kerrigan Johnson has grown up knowing her local volunteer fire department. Her father, Kevin Johnson, volunteered at the Durant Fire Department for a time, as does her uncle, Ryan Tappendorf, currently, and many of the firefighters she knew when she was younger still work there today.
