Veterans safely observe 101st annual Scott County Memorial Day service

Posted

UPDATED: This story was updated to add the Memorial Day Roll Call of the names of soldiers and sailors who served, along with those who died, in service to our country.

Just like every Memorial Day for the past century, veterans read the names of Scott County’s soldiers from Civil War through Afghanistan at Scott County’s historic Summit Church.

A reverent group, some in masks, listened to recitation of more than 100 family names still familiar in the county today: Criswells, Amhofs, Baustians, Ewoldts, Gertzes, Gruenhagens, Keppys, Nagles, Saladinos, Holsts.

Some names, including Glunz, came up in more than one war.

The remembrance began at 9 a.m. with Our Savior Presbyterian Church Pastor Tiffany McClure dedicating an invocation to her Vietnam veteran father, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and Carole and Ron Oliver leading the National Anthem.

Then came the roll call, the 101-year tradition of reciting the names of those who served.

Veterans John Pischke, Ron Oliver, Tom Knapper, Duane Miller and Tom Zimmerman read the names beneath a cross built a decade ago by Our Saviour youth. They fashioned it from the cross beams of the old Carstens family’s 1865 Scott County home. Carl Carstens sat in the back row.

Organizers dispensed with the traditional ice cream social in consideration of the pandemic shutdown, and concluded with taps and a gun salute from veterans facing the historic Summit Church cemetery.

Here are the names of soldiers who served, compiled by the Eldridge VFW and American Legion.

TO THE AUDIENCE, SHOULD WE MISS SOMEONE, Please contact one of our officers and let them know so we may include them in future readings, Thank You.
