Obituary: Melvin Hill

Melvin G. Hill, 86, of Eldridge, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2023, at Harmony Utica Ridge Davenport.  Visitation was 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Runge Mortuary, Davenport.  The funeral service followed at 12 p.m. Tuesday in the Runge Chapel.  Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Pleasant Valley.  Memorials may be made to Alzheimer Association, ATTN: Megan Olsen, 1225 E. Mel was born Feb. 14, 1937, in Davenport to Harry and Edith (Russel) Hill.  He was united in marriage to Claudia Gray on May 30, 1992, in Davenport. Mel had been employed for 32 years as an electrician for Oscar Mayer, retiring in 1996.  He then went on to work for another 10 years with the Runge Mortuary as their maintenance supervisor.

Mel was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church Eldridge.  He loved to tinker and fix anything old that needed work.  He was a ham radio operator and loved ghost towns, maintaining a web site on them.  Mel was always ready to lend a hand and help when he could.

Survivors include his wife Claudia Hill, Davenport; daughter Melody Hill; sons Tim Hill, Davenport, Sean Eckhardt, Eldridge, and Mark Eckhardt, Vacaville, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters Charlotte (John) Ynein and Marilyn Taylor; and brothers Ronald (Cindy) Hill, Charles (Augusta) Hill, and Larry (Anna) Hill.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents.
