Kenneth “Ken” Francis Mickelson, a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished member of his community, peacefully passed away on Nov. 16, 2023, in Wilmington, N.C. He was born on March 21, 1951, in Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth Roseland Mickelson and Mercedes McAllister Mickelson and infant sister Marleen.
Ken was a man of deep family ties, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane Stogsdill Mickelson, and his three children: Jared C. Mickelson (Stephanie) of Virginia, Sarah M. Bragg (Jared) of Georgia, and Zachary A. Mickelson of Georgia. Ken was not only a loving father but also a cherished grandpa to Cole, Valeria, Amelia, Cyrus, Rosemary, Eli, and Jubel Mickelson, and Isaac and Ethan Bragg. He was also a loving sibling to Mike Mickelson, Shelley Pimlott (Kenny), Sally Hinz (Louie), Mercedes Rosing (Mike) of Iowa, and Laura Sandmann (Steve) of Texas.
Ken’s educational journey included graduating from North Scott High School in Eldridge, followed by a bachelor’s degree from Saint Ambrose University, Davenport. His dedication to learning and personal growth laid the foundation for a successful career in the transportation and logistics industry. Ken made significant contributions to the field through his work with esteemed companies such as Ralston Purina, Sony Electronics, and Manhattan Associates.
Outside of his professional life, Ken had a passion for genealogy, delving into the rich tapestry of his family’s history. He also found great joy in watching football, baseball and was a dedicated fan. However, his most profound happiness came from spending quality time with his family and friends, creating cherished memories that will be treasured forever.
Ken was not only committed to his family but also to his community. He served as the chairman of the board for the Dekalb County Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta throughout the 80’s and 90’s, making a positive impact on the local businesses and community. He also served as the president of his homeowner’s association in his retirement years.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, at St. Andrews on the Sound Episcopal Church in Wilmington. Immediately following the service will be the interment of ashes, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall, where friends and family can come together to share stories and remember a remarkable man.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the friends, family, first responders, doctors, and nurse practitioners who provided care and support to Ken during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation Association or the Lower Cape Fear Life Care program.
Kenneth Francis Mickelson will be dearly missed, but his legacy of love, dedication, and community spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing him.
