Obituary: Herbert Meyer

Herbert Edwin Meyer, 92, of Dixon, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, at Wheatland Manor.  A visitation was held from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant.  A funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 7, at the funeral home.  Burial took place in Dixon Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to Wheatland Manor, St. Croix Hospice, or the Dixon Fire Department.  Condolences may be left at www.bentleyfuneralhome.com.

Herb was born on June 19, 1930, the son of Julius and Bertha (Laasch) Meyer.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.  Herb married Barb Horstmann on Nov. 27, 1954, in Grand Mound.  Barb passed away on March 22, 2001.

Herb worked for Caterpillar in Mount Joy for over 25 years, retiring in 1988.  He then worked for Vander Heiden Trucking, until retiring at the age of 80.  Herb enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping.  He proudly served his community and was a former member of the Dixon Volunteer Fire Department and a 69-year member of the Dixon American Legion.  Most of all, Herb loved spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.  

Herb is survived by his four children, Gary (Regina) Meyer of Grand Mound, Sandy (Roger) Duncan of Milan, Ill., Lynn Urwin of Bettendorf, and Dean (Julie) Meyer of Bettendorf; five grandchildren, Jennifer (Bill) Bradley, Bart (Amber) Duncan, Taylor Urwin, Jared Urwin, and Sarah (Josh) Arians; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Delmar “Snowball” (Carol) Meyer and LaVerne (Shirley) Meyer; and special niece, Marci Zogg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; four brothers, Arnie, Bill, Tuffy and Milton Meyer; and three sisters, Ethel Moeller, June Sievers, and Betty Mayerhofer.
