Obituary: Thomas L. Hagge

Thomas L. Hagge, age 78, of Iowa City, formerly of Durant, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Friday, Dec. 12, 2025, at The Bird House–Hospice Home of Johnson County.  A memorial visitation was held from 4–7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 17, at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant.  A memorial service with military honors was held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 18, at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Durant American Legion, Post #430, Iowa City Hospice or Camp Courageous.  Online condolences may be left at www.bentleyfuneralhome.com.

Tom was born on Oct. 3, 1947, the son of Wilbur and Dolores (Tyler) Hagge in Davenport.  He graduated from Durant High School with the Class of 1965.  Tom attended Muscatine Community College and graduated from Scott Community College with a degree in motorcycle mechanics.  Tom proudly served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam.  He married Sheryl Nelson on June 18, 1977, in Davenport.  Sheryl passed away on Aug. 5, 2012.  Tom later married Mary Scheetz-Lenz on Nov. 8, 2014, in Durant.

Tom began his career at Lujack’s, where he worked for 10 years as a service manager and salesman. He later spent 20 years with Ecolab as a commercial pest control specialist.  A man of faith and service, Tom was a longtime member of St. Paul Episcopal Church in Durant. He was also a proud member of the Durant American Legion Post #430 for 45 years and belonged to the United States Bowling Congress.

Outside of work and his community involvement, Tom found joy in motorcycles, attending car shows, bowling, fishing, listening to music, baking, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and a lifelong Chicago Bears fan. Tom was a devoted husband, family man, and friend whose life was defined by hard work, loyalty, and a genuine love for the people around him.  Above all, Tom cherished his family, attending his grandchildren's activities and spending time with his friends.

Tom will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary, three children, Tommy Hagge of Davenport, Samantha (Greg) Parsons of Durant, Michael "Mickey" Hagge of Tip-ton; two step-sons, Mark (Melissa) Lenz of Iowa City and Kevin Lenz of Lone Tree; seven grandchildren, Jacob, Rylee, Zachary, Dawson, Henry, Stella and Lilliana; and three sisters, Cathy (Dennis) Juchter, Rhonda (Bruce) Skahill and Jean Novinski, all of Durant.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Dolores; and his first wife, Sheryl.
