Ronald C. Goethals, age 80, of New Liberty, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.  A Celebration of Life will begin at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 7, at the Bennett American Legion. Online condolences may be left at www.bentleyfuneralhome.com.

Ron was born on Dec. 30, 1945, in Davenport, the son of Charles and Zelma (Timmerman) Goethals. He graduated from Bennett High School.  Ron proudly served his country after being drafted into the United States Army during Vietnam. His bravery and sacrifice were recognized with the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Silver Star, honors that reflected his courage and dedication to his fellow soldiers.

Following his military service, Ron was a hardworking and dedicated member of his community. He owned and operated Buford’s Bar and Grill in New Liberty for 20 years.  He later retired from the City of Davenport after 22 years of service.

Ron enjoyed the outdoors and loved camping, hunting, and fishing, especially deer and pheasant hunting. He treasured fishing trips to Canada and the adventure of hunting black bear there. A devoted sports fan, Ron cheered faithfully for the Chicago Bears, followed NASCAR—especially Dale Earnhardt—and supported the Iowa Hawkeyes.

At home, Ron found joy in raising goats and rabbits and spending time with his beloved black Labrador retrievers, Bob and Gunner. He was also an excellent cook, famous among family and friends for his chili and pork and beans, dishes that brought people together around the table.

Ron will be remembered for his service to his country, his love of the outdoors, his strong work ethic, and the simple joys he shared with those around him. His legacy of dedication, loyalty, and generosity will not be forgotten.

Ron will be lovingly remembered by the love of his life, Brenda Goethals; three children Ryan (Brenda Berg) Goethals, Rhonda (Mike Boots) Wadsworth and Jacobi (Dale) Willits; four grandchildren, Taylor (Justin), Levi (Lexy), Jared and Mackenzie; three great-grandchildren; his sisters, Marilyn (Harry Longley) Steffen of Bettendorf, Shirley Denkmann of Pope Valley, Calif., Fran (John) Brus of Morning Sun, Eileen (John Meyers) Urmie of Nichols; and his brother-in-law, Dallas Carson of West Liberty.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Carson; nephew, Terry Carson; and a niece, Juanita Fischer.
