This year, Lt. J.L. Shryer American Legion Post 430 of Durant will be selecting two Durant High School boys who have completed their junior year to attend the annual American Legion of Iowa Boys State scheduled for June 13-18 at Camp Dodge (near Johnston).

Post 430 covers the cost of the delegates to attend. Applications may be obtained through the Durant High School counselor’s office. Applications must be received by Feb. 28, and can be mailed to: Richard Stoltenberg, 21450 30th Ave, Stockton, Iowa 52747.

Boys State delegates will hold party caucus meetings, conventions, conduct campaigns, and hold primary and general elections. Not everyone can be elected to an office, but there are many other activities available. Delegates can participate in running a daily newspaper, be a part of a fully functioning court system, general assembly (House and Senate), and law enforcement system. Boys State offers the opportunity to play and/or sing in the Boys State band or chorus.

Boys State is a richly rewarding and educational program that has prompted many former participants to seek careers in public service. Selection serves as testimony to a participant’s character and leadership skills, and is an experience recognized by employers, service academies and university admissions boards as an indicator of strong leadership and character traits.
