This year, Lt. J.L. Shryer American Legion Post 430 of Durant will be selecting Durant High School boys who have completed their junior year to attend the annual American Legion of Iowa Boys State scheduled for June 19-24, 2022 to be held at Camp Dodge (near Johnston, Iowa).

The American Legion of Iowa Boys State is a weeklong, hands-on, youth leadership experience in the operation of the democratic form of government. There are opportunities to win scholarships and earn college credit to applicable schools. Boys State delegates will hold party caucus meetings, conventions, conduct campaigns, and hold a primary and general election. Not everyone can be elected to an office, but there are many other activities available.

Delegates can participate in running a daily newspaper, be a part of a fully functioning Court System, General Assembly (House and Senate), and Law Enforcement System.

Boys State offers the opportunity to play and/or sing in The American Legion of Iowa Boys State band or chorus.

Selection of boys to attend Boys State serves as testimony to their character and leadership skills, and is an experience recognized by employers, service academies and university admissions boards as an indicator of strong leadership and character traits.

Post 430 covers the cost of the delegates to attend. There is no charge to the delegates. Applications may be obtained through the Durant High School counselor’s office. Applications must be received by Feb. 28 and can be mailed to: Richard Stoltenberg, 21450 30th Ave, Stockton, IA, 52769.
