DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate encourages Iowans to register to vote or update their registration in conjunction with National Voter Registration Month, which runs through Sept. 30. Additionally, Tuesday, Sept. 22 was National Voter Registration Day.

The National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) established September as National Voter Registration Month beginning in 2002, as a non-partisan means of encouraging voter participation and increasing awareness about state requirements and deadlines for voting. Secretary Pate serves as the Past-President and Cybersecurity Committee Co-Chair of NASS.

To register to vote in Iowa, you must be at least 17 years old. The deadline to pre-register before the 2020 general election is Saturday, Oct. 24. Approximately 90 percent of eligible Iowans are registered and there are more than 2 million active registered voters in the state.

Secretary Pate’s Voter Ready website has valuable information, resources and accessible tools for those interested in learning more about the process at VoterReady.Iowa.gov. Additionally, canivote.org is a helpful nonpartisan tool created by NASS in conjunction with state election officials to help eligible voters learn how and where to go vote.
