Pets have become 'new colleagues'

We all know the old adage “A dog is a man’s best friend.” This common phrase is referring to the history of close relations, loyalty, and companionship with humans. Science shows that this symbiotic relationship has been as beneficial for humans as their canine companions. Research also suggests dog ownership may improve heart health, decrease depression, and even help you live longer.

Growing up I think all kids want a dog. I was no different. I had a couple in my younger years. Fast-forward to becoming a parent and my boys wanting a dog. I was adamant that we were not getting one. I knew I would be the one having to take care of it and I already had two children, a husband and a full-time job. I wasn’t about to add anything else. Well, like most parents, I gave in. As you might expect, things didn’t work out.

Fast-forward a few more years. My youngest son and his girlfriend are in college and they decided getting a dog would help them when they are stressing out about school. Of course, I tried to convince them it wasn’t a good idea knowing that I would be sharing in the responsibilities of the dog on the weekends and during summer when they are home.

Well, if you live in Durant, I’m sure you have seen me walking my grand puppy Jax on many occasions. I have to admit, I have grown very fond of this shaggy guy (don’t tell Jake and Emilee). And just like a kid, I spoil him rotten. I can’t help myself. They get on me all the time about giving him treats and other things. So I just wait till their not home to give him treats.

While quarantined, I know some families have acquired pets. They are furry, happy and oblivious to the stress going on around us all. For many who are working from home, their pets have become “new colleagues.” Social media is full of postings people with their pets during this time. You can’t help but smile.

A word of advice if you are considering getting a pet, they are a lot of work especially if you get a puppy. It is like having another kid in the house. Maybe consider rescuing a dog or getting one that is older and already trained.

For all you cat lovers out there, I know your cats are your best friends and give the same warm fuzzy that a dog can.

How about a little humor on this topic? The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that dogs cannot contract COVID-19. Dogs previously held in quarantine can now be released. To be clear, WHO let the dogs out.
