Robert Eugene Gust, aged 86, passed away peacefully on April 16, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family in the Good Samaritan Society in Algona. Born on Nov. 22, 1938, in Davenport, he was the son of the late Harry and Leila (Mumm) Gust.

Inurnment and graveside military honors by the Wilton American Legion Post #584 will be held to honor Bob at Melpine Cemetery in Muscatine, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 21.

Robert “Bob” was the eldest of three siblings. He attended Bunkerhill grade school and then graduated from high school in Wilton in 1957. He enlisted in the Army in May of 1958, and served honorably during peacetime, being discharged in June of 1961. After his return from the service, he was smitten by Susan “Susie” Sheetz, and they were married on July 12, 1964. Three daughters were born to this union. They were married for 50 years and celebrated the event in Galena, Ill., with their family. Bob enjoyed the beautiful hot air balloon ride with Susie and his family during that celebration.

Bob worked for many years at CDS (Communication Data Services) in Wilton. He was a key employee there for many years, working to keep all the machinery running.  When something wasn’t working right, fellow employees would say “Go for the Gusto!”  Bob took his mechanical expertise to Simpson Nursing Home in West Liberty where he worked until retirement.

Beyond working, Bob was interested in local politics. He was elected to the Wilton City Council and then continued his political career when he was elected mayor.  He worked hard to better the town and the lives of people in Wilton during that time.  He also served as a volunteer fireman for many years in Wilton.  He enjoyed gardening in his spare time as was evidenced by the two huge gardens in the backyard. Bob enjoyed the coffee club at the Zip Mart and the Candy Kitchen with his friends.

He is survived by his children, Constanse “Connie” (Dale) Mechler of Algona, and Diane (Tom) Long of Cedar Rapids; his grandchildren, Alyssa, Joan, Hannah, Emily, and Brendon; his sister, Janet Beinke of Moscow; and nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Susie; his daughter, Lara; his sister, Jeanne Sadler and nephew, Eddie Beinke. Condolences may be left at www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.
