Robert was born in 1959 in West Liberty, Iowa, the son of Robert George and Ann Rose (Elvin) Hogan, Sr. After graduating from West Liberty High School, he enlisted in the United States Army. He was stationed in San Francisco, the DMZ of the Republic of Korea, and was assigned to the “Enewetak Atoll Cleanup Project” in the Marshall Islands. He served in the Army from 1976 until his discharge as the rank of Sergeant, in 1981. Robert worked at North Star Steel/Gerdau Ameristeel, retiring after 38 years.

He was a talented mechanic, and enjoyed working on small motors and electronics. Extremely bright and well read, he held a special interest in world and U.S. history, and a penchant for remembering historic dates and details. Robert was a HAM Radio operator, and held an Amateur Radio License for decades. He loved to fish and appreciated animals and nature, and spent a great deal of time outdoors.

Extremely private and modest, he was a true patriot and a “gentle giant” with a wicked sense of humor, who insisted on living his life on his own terms.

He will be missed by his friends, NSS/Gerdau steel workers, Amanda Nesbit of Wilton and his pets.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In line with his wishes and COVID-19, there will be no formal service. A celebration of his life will take place among friends post-COVID.
