Christophe Kees Josef Asselbergs, 80, of Durant, Iowa, passed away Monday, March 22, 2021, at his home. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, March 26, 2021 at St. David’s Anglican Church, Durant. Masks are required for the funeral service. Burial will take place in Durant Cemetery.

Chris was born on June 9, 1940 in France after his family was displaced from Holland during World War II. At the age of 18, Chris moved to London as a student. He returned to Holland and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Chris immigrated to Canada in 1966 and worked for N.A.S.A in Fort Churchill, Canada until 1970. He then moved to New Mexico and continued with his studies. Chris earned his Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering in Oregon before returning to Canada.

Chris married Barbara Ronning on Nov. 25, 1978 in Calgary, Canada.

In 1986, Chris founded Suncourt Inc. in Calgary and moved to Durant in 1991. Chris was a visionary and very creative. He was mechanically inclined, and could build or fabricate whatever he needed. Chris also collected automobiles, especially Italian and British sports cars and antique clocks. He loved the refuge and created “O’Reilly Trail” north of Suncourt.

Chris will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara of Durant; two children, Doug (Lisa Dehner) Asselbergs of Santa Rosa, California, and Michele Lockard of Las Vegas, Nevada; two brothers, Kees (Ina) Asselbergs of Holland, and Paul Asselbergs of Spain.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Kees and Maria (Dekker) Asselbergs; one brother, Hans Asselbergs; and one son-in-law, Dennis Lockhard.
