Mary J. Norton, 88, of Wilton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Visitation was held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 10, at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 11, at the First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. Burial took place in Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton. Mary was born on Nov. 14, 1935, to Harry and Ella (Kai) Sorgenfrey in Durant. She graduated from Durant High School. Mary married G. Mel Norton on Jan. 12, 1953, at Camp Roberts, Calif.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Wilton. For many years, Mary was a teacher’s aide at the Wilton Elementary School. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, gardening and square dancing.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her husband of over 71 years, Mel; and their children: Michael (Susan) Norton, Jane (Brad) Garrett both of Wilton and Pam (Tim) Buchanan of Olin; six grandchildren: Eric (Laura Arnold) Norton, Jennifer (Steve) Glover, Ryan (Joelle) Buchanan, Deawn (Ippei) Takahashi, Molly Garrett and her husband, Brad Cerny and Ben (Evelyn) Garrett; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Roger, James, Kenneth, Howard, LaMoyne “Butch” and Stanley.
