Many ‘maybes’ this May

Posted

May comes with some “maybes.” Maybe summer sports will be able to start so that graduating seniors can participate in their last sporting events. Maybe couples can proceed with their wedding plans that were put on hold. Maybe people can get back to work and support their families. And just maybe we can begin to get back to our “new normal” whatever that may look like.

Mother’s Day was last Sunday. During these crazy times, moms have had to wear many hats. They are mom, teacher, nurse and care provider. Being a mom is hard work, and adding in all these extra responsibilities can be overwhelming. To me, moms are also superheroes. I found this poem (by Joanna Fuchs) that brings home all the things moms have been going through lately.

How did you find the energy, mom, to do all the things you did, to be a teacher, nurse and counselor to me, when I was a kid?

How did you do it all, mom, be a chauffeur, cook and friend, yet find time to be a playmate, I just can’t comprehend.

I see now it was love, mom, that made you come whenever I’d call, your inexhaustible love, mom and I thank you for it all.

Did you realize that the 2020 graduates were born when the world experienced the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and they are graduating as the world is going through a pandemic? Here’s a little tribute to the 2020 graduates.

Although your two biggest launches into freedom (birth and graduation) have taken place in the midst of tragedies, just know that the world is an amazing, loving, beautiful place and it is waiting for you with open arms. We grieve with you that your senior year is ending this way, but we can’t wait to see how you overcome and soar. Go forward and do great things.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize nurses during the month of May. Every day nurses provide quality, compassionate and critical care to patients. Over the past weeks and months, nurses have worked heroically on the frontlines of the COVID-19 response, their contributions have been exponentially magnified. Nursing is not merely a vocation; it is a special calling to serve others selflessly. Thank you for all that you do.

Finally, can we all agree that for the next apocalypse that hair stylists are an essential service? #INTHISTOGETHER
