Leon Allen Steinhagen, age 67, of New Liberty, passed away peacefully with family members by his side after a short illness on Aug. 28, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital. A celebration of life will be held at from 5-8 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Durant American Legion. Memorials may be made to the Cedar County Conservation. Leon was born on May 4, 1957, in Davenport, the son of Marvin “Jack” and Leona (Lafrenz) Steinhagen. He graduated from Durant High School with the Class of 1975.
Leon was well-known for his skill in repairing small engines, a craft he pursued for many years. His commitment to his community was evident through his active involvement in the Durant Jaycees and his leadership as the president of the Cedar County Conservation since 2022. Leon was a man of many interests, including fishing, farming, and stock car racing. He also had a unique talent for custom knife making, a hobby that brought him great joy. Leon will be remembered for his contributions to his community and his many passions. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He is survived by his special friend, Cindy Kuhn; three siblings, Anita Holst, Kathy (William) Stegen, and Marvin Steinhagen; a brother in-law, Dennis (Deanna Timm) Weih; many nieces and nephews; many great and great-great nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Edythe Weih; brother-in-law, Billy Holst; sister-in-law, Jo Steinhagen; nieces, Shannon Burkey, Angi Kempf and Tonya Stegen; and one nephew, Jim Geigle.
