Cedar county accident claims three lives

A head-on collision on Intestate 80 in Cedar County killed three people in the early morning hours of Dec. 21.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, a 2015 Nissan Altima driven by Eric Nunez, 20, of Plano, Illinois was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 around 4:30 a.m. Dec. 21, when his vehicle collided with a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan driven by Robert Larson, 70, of West Liberty.

Larson was traveling westbound in the westbound lanes at the time of the head-on crash at the 254-mile marker. The accident claimed the lives of Nunez, Larson, and passenger Teresa Larson, 68, of West Liberty. All three were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital.

The incident remains under investigation. The State Patrol was assisted by the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office, West Branch Fire Department and the Cedar County Medical Examiner.
