The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GMCCI), in partnership with the city of Muscatine and with the guidance of public health officials, has determined that the Independence Day Celebration will not be held this year due to ongoing concerns over the COVID-19 health crisis.
GMCCI and city officials continue to closely monitor the guidelines and recommendations provided by Muscatine County Public Health, the Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) while making this tough decision at this time. The events of the day feature a parade in downtown and fireworks along the riverfront that draws an attendance of more than 10,000 people annually.
Given the current guidelines, practicing safe, social distancing would be difficult to maintain. Ultimately, the partners want to ensure the health and well-being of residents and visitors.
“As disappointing as it is to cancel this long-standing community tradition, we want to take every precaution to keep members of our community safe and healthy,” Erik Reader, GMCCI President and CEO, said. “We are still looking to have a community celebration of sorts, but later in the summer. At this time we are exploring rescheduling the fireworks, adding live music, and trying to find ways to support small businesses that have been impacted by the recent events.”
Muscatine Mayor Diana Broderson emphasized that public safety will always be her utmost concern.
“Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our citizens and of the visitors to our community,” Broderson said. “The current health crisis has brought significant challenges to our lives. While it is disappointing that this celebration cannot be held, we will be able to enjoy these types of celebrations in the near future by following the guidelines provided for social distancing and personal hygiene.”
More information will be released as future event activities are confirmed and necessary permits are approved accordingly.
