Sunday emergency test should activate most Scott County phones

1 p.m. alert is first test of never-used system

Wait for it. A text and alert on your cell phone 1 p.m. Sunday is just Scott County Emergency Management Agency’s first test of a warning system it has yet to use.

Agency director Brian Payne said the alert will let him know the speed and reach of the system.

Those who miss alerts may want to sign up.

“To date, we’ve never sent one out. Now we’re looking at tests on an annual basis,” Payne said.

Android users can search their apps for Emergency Alerts and select a setting.

Most iPhones already accept government alerts, including the county’s. Select a preference at the bottom of the settings/notifications screen.

Payne hopes most do.

“We’re working to develop processes and procedures to target alerts,” he said. A public information officer steering committee is advising the county.

“We really want folks to have emergency turned on, but it is completely up to them. I get it. Maybe they work third shift. But to date, have never sent one out. This is the first time conducting test as well.”
