Spring sports athletes get sliver of hope

Governing bodies set revised state schedules, if school resumes May 1

By now, North Scott’s spring sports season were supposed to be in full swing. Both the boys’ and girls’ Lancer Invitational track meets were expected to be in the books, and the Lancer girls’ soccer team was supposed to be the last team to open its campaign, with a home game against Davenport West on Monday.

Of course, the coronavirus pandemic changed all that, as athletes and coaches have been sidelined and prohibited from practicing since schools went on shutdown on March 16.

Originally, schools were set to reopen on Monday, April 13,, which meant that sports would also be back in session. However, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds announced last week that the school closure notice would be extended to at least April 30.

As a result, the spring sports season is still on hold, and any further delays, which many expect to happen, will put the entire season in jeopardy.

However, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union are trying to be hopeful. On Monday, both organizations released new revised schedules, if indeed school resumes on May 1.

“This is great news,” tweeted North Scott boys’ track coach Joe Greenwood. “I am so excited to get back to work as a team. Athletes, do your part to be ready when we get back as a team.”

All sports teams would be able to resume practices that day. The first date of competition for track, golf and tennis teams would be Monday, May 4, with boys’ and girls’ soccer teams able to compete on Friday, May 8.

Baseball and softball teams would be allowed to begin practice on May 4, their original start date.

New postseason dates were also announced.

The boys’ and girls’ district track meets would be held on Thursday, May 28, with the state meet scheduled for June 4-6.

Post-season tennis tournaments would be held on May 20 (girls individual), May 23 (boys and girls team) and May 27 (boys team). The boys’ state tennis tournament for teams would be held June 1-2, and 13, with the individual tournament set for June 10-11. The girls’ state tennis individual tourney would be held June 5-6, with the team tourney set for June 9.

The girls’ golf postseason run would begin Tuesday, May 26, with the state meet set for June 8-9.

Boys’ soccer would begin postseason play on June 4, with the state tournament scheduled for June 16, 18 and 20.

Girls’ soccer teams would begin regional action on June 8, with the state tourney set for June 15, 17 and 19.
