Obituary: Thomas Verhelst

A funeral service for Thomas Charles “Duke” Verhelst Jr., 55, of Bennett, was held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 3, at Peace Church of Christ United, Bennett. Visitation was two hours prior to the service on Friday at the church. Cremation rites were accorded following the service. Fry Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Verhelst died Friday, June 26, 2020, near New Liberty, as a result of a sudden physical ailment resulting in his car leaving the roadway and colliding with a tree.

Thomas Verhelst was born July 12, 1964, in Davenport, the son of Thomas and Jeanette (Meade) Verhelst.

He married Jackie (Schenkel) Dennis on Sept. 24, 1988, at Duck Creek Park, Davenport.

Survivors include his wife; his daughters, Peggy (Lonnie) VanDyne, Tulsa, Okla., and Kim (Ron) Schott, Tipton; a son, Don Dennis Jr., Tipton; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his father, Thomas Verhelst Sr., Bettendorf; a sister, Jaylene (Chuck) Taylor, Roanoke, Texas; his brothers, John Verhelst, Buffalo, and Brian (Lonna) Verhelst, Davenport; and his mother-in-law, Peggy Schenkel, Bennett.
