Obituary: Lester Oberbreckling

Lester W. Oberbreckling, 86, of Eldridge passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, at Chambers Funeral Home, Eldridge.  Visitation will be from 12 p.m. noon until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery, Davenport. Memorials may be directed to Our Savior Presbyterian Church, LeClaire.

Lester was born on March 31, 1936, in Dyersville, the son of Otto and Alvina (Timmber) Oberbreckling.  Following his high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Germany.  After his honorable discharge, he worked for Phillip Morris in Charlotte, N.C., before returning to Iowa, where he worked for Goss Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids.  Prior to his retirement, he worked for Advanced Machining in Cedar Rapids.  He was creative and excelled at learning his skill with precision. On Dec. 18, 2010, Lester married Joanne (Mess) Fahrenkrog at Our Savior Presbyterian Church, where they were both active members of the congregation.  In his younger years, he enjoyed bicycling and was proud of his accomplishment of bicycling across the state of Iowa.  He enjoyed gardening, exhibiting antique tractors, playing cards, and ballroom dancing.  Above all, he loved spending time with his family.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Joanne Oberbreckling of Eldridge; daughters, Tamie (Tommy Bruner) Oberbreckling-Unash of Ely, Teresa (Ed Van Amburg) Oberbreckling-Hyde of Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Jonathon Jordan, Chuck (fiancée, Alex Marin) Steggall, Nick (fiancée, Katie Neuzil) Steggall, Ryan (Michael Werner) Unash; a great-granddaughter, Trinity Jordan; sisters, Madonna Gustavesen of Cedar Rapids, Marge (Rich) Wolfe of Ryan; brothers, Tom (Lana) Oberbreckling of Onslow, Herb (Kate) Oberbreckling of Morley, Daniel Oberbreckling of Coggon, Charles Oberbreckling of Walker, Luke (Mary) Oberbreckling of Mechanicsville, Randy Oberbreckling of Ryan; sister-in-law, Jean Oberbreckling of Wyoming, Iowa;  step-daughters, Eileen (Todd Friederichs) Gevers of Dixon, Lisa (Chris Rymars) Holst of Davenport, Sheryl (Jeff) Geerts of Johnston; four step-grandchildren, Ashley (Laurence) Bramblett, Sarah (Joseph) Rymars, Kyle Geerts, and Kayla Geerts; three step-great-grandchildren, Emmett, Eleanor, and Emelia Bramblett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Jerome, Art, Ron, and Mark; and a sister, Delrose Phelps.
