Obituary: Gerald Gisel

A Service of Christian Burial for Gerald John “Jerry’ Gisel, 86, of DeWitt, was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Burial with military honors was in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa. Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 4-7 p.m. at the Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt.

Mr. Gisel died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, at Genesis East Medical Center, Davenport.

Gerald Gisel was born Feb. 1, 1933, northeast of Delmar, the son of John and Ruby (Biedler) Gisel. He graduated from Welton High School in 1951.

He was drafted by the U.S. Army and ran the motor pool. He was stationed at Camp Roberts, Calif., and in Germany and Des Moines.

He married Marjorie “Margie” Soenksen on Dec. 14, 1952, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. She died Oct. 21, 2016.

He had worked for Ernest Soenksen Construction, and began working for Clinton Engines in Maquoketa in November of 1951.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt.

His hobbies were playing cards, doing custom combining and baling, and selling CB and two-way radios.

Survivors include his children, Susan (Don) Petersen, Park View, and John Gisel (Jill Nothdorf) and Dennis Gisel, all of DeWitt; his grandchildren, Kevin (Amber) Petersen, Andrew (Lynse) Gisel, Becca Gisel, Jamie Ong, Ryan Ong, Chris Hartmann, Abigail Hartmann, and Margaret Hartmann; six great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and a brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Elaine Schoening and Russell (Sandy) Soenksen.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald, and a brother-in-law, Lewis Schoening.
