Galen Allen “Al” Moore, 78, of Eldridge, formerly of DeWitt, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Fieldstone of DeWitt.
Visitation was from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30 (today), at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Please bring a lawn chair.
Galen Allen Moore was born April 4, 1947, in Maquoketa, to Joan and Galen Moore. Al graduated from Central Community Schools in DeWitt. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1966. He proudly served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. While on leave after basic training, Al proposed to the love of his life, Jeri Darland, on Christmas Day of 1966. The couple were married March 6, 1967, the beginning of a marriage that lasted over 55 years. They were blessed with two children, Tracy and Jason. Al worked over 30 years for the Scott County Health Department, starting as health inspector, and retiring as deputy director of environmental health in 2003. He held leadership roles on several boards dedicated to environmental health.
He found joy in the simple pleasures of life — spending time with his grandkids, playing softball, cheering on his children at their sporting events, mowing his lawn, boating with his beloved wife, and being surrounded by family. One of his proudest moments came last year when he welcomed his first great-grandchild, a blessing that filled his heart with joy. He gave many that he loved a nickname, a small but meaningful gesture that made you feel like you truly belonged. It was one of the many ways he showed how deeply he cared. He’ll be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, his larger-than-life personality, and his fierce loyalty. He was always there when you needed him, the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation.
He was loving father to Tracy (Matt) Lindaman of Eldridge, and Galen Jason (Jen) Moore of Plainfield, Ill.; Big Grandpa to Shelby (Matt), Hannah (fiancé Ryan), Nick (Miranti), Ceci, Jack, Galen Logan, Will, Teagan, and Finn; great-grandpa to Penelope Jean; loving and ornery brother to Dee (Dave) Runge, Deb (Gary) Carson, Mark (Chris) Cleveland, Gayla (Al) Earles, Sheryl (Art) Carter, Brian (Kim) Moore, and Eric (Glee) Moore; uncle to many loving nieces and nephews; and brother-in-law to “the 5 Js.”
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife in 2022, as well as by his parents, his grandson Jack, and his sister Deb.
Arrangements are in the care of Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. Condolences may be expressed at www.schultzfuneralhomes.com.
