Obituary: Carolyn Howard

Carolyn Ilene (Carrigan) Howard, 92, died on Saturday, June 19, 2021. She was born on Dec. 17, 1928, to Harvey Lyle and Evelyn Tillie (Wallis) Carrigan in rural Woodbine, Iowa. Carolyn was raised near Pisgah and graduated from Pisgah High School. Carolyn married Everett Howard on May 23, 1948, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. The couple lived in Pisgah and raised their family there.

Carolyn found a local census and they needed help with the polls.  She helped out and was able to go to Chicago to learn more about the census.  While she was there, she found out about a full-time job opening as a government census taker.  She was hired for the position and worked in that career for many years.

Carolyn enjoyed gardening.  She had an organic vegetable garden and many flower gardens. Another one of her favorite things were sewing and quilting. Most of all Carolyn enjoyed spending time with her family.   

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Rodrick William Howard; son, Lyle Eugene “Gene” Howard; daughter, Denise Howard; and sister, Twylia Hinkel. She is survived by two sons, Drew Howard of Pisgah, and Lynn Howard of Bellevue, Neb.; grandson, Nathan Howard; three great-grandchildren; four siblings, Jeanne Pratt of Moorhead, Iowa, Barbara and her husband Kenneth Wimer of Woodbine, Iowa, Ronda Steinhoff of Syracuse, Neb., Randy Carrigan and his wife Kerri of Soldier, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends,

A memorial visitation was held on Friday, June 25, at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine, Iowa.
