Baseball, softball seasons delayed

While spring sports coaches are keeping their fingers crossed that their postponed seasons will still get under way, softball and baseball coaches learned last week that their seasons have also been delayed.

As of now, spring sports teams are supposed to begin practice on May 1. However, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is expected to make a decision soon on whether or not to reopen schools this year, and if she doesn’t, those seasons most likely won’t materialize.

Last week, the Des Moines Public School District was the first to announce that its students would not be returning to school, and that there would be no spring sports seasons for its athletes.

Baseball and softball teams were originally scheduled to begin practice on May 4, but in a joint press release last week, the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced that the first day of practice for both sports would now be May 18, and the first day of competition would be June 1.

Those dates assume that schools will reopen on May 1. The postseason schedules for both sports remain the same, with the state softball tournament set for July 20-24, and the state baseball tourney scheduled for July 24-Aug. 1.
