May 6, 1982: Construction of the relocated U.S. 61 bridge over the Wapsipinicon River was under way, with completion expected by Sept. 1. Iowa Department of Transportation officials were hoping the new stretch of highway from Interstate 80 to DeWitt could be open by Nov. 1.
