'Wonderful things happening around us'

Posted

When I initially started writing this column for this week’s paper, I was going to address specific topics for the month of April. But, I really want to keep it light-hearted and uplifting during these uncertain crazy times we are in right now.

Let’s talk about all the wonderful things that are happening around us.

I know that if you have watched any news or been on any social media platform at all, you’ve seen some of the great things students, parents, and everyday citizens are doing to let others know we are in this together!

Jadelynn Brown and her cousins Kearston and Kyleigh Reinier handed out thank you bags full of food to truck drivers at the I-80 rest stop near Wilton on Saturday, March 21. The girls come from a family of truck drivers and have noticed how busy they are making sure grocery store shelves across the country get stocked. The girls filled the bags with water, sandwiches, chips and pudding. Receiving the thank you made truck drivers’ day.

Meanwhile, you have parents at home with their kids wondering how to keep them entertained. Many have created activities to creatively teach their kids. One parent built a homemade obstacle course in her house, made with items and furniture she already had. Another family built the largest fort made with blankets. You have farm families teaching their children about things on the farm. Even though kids are not in school, they are still learning.

It’s amazing to me how innovative people are being to help get through this pandemic, even here at the Advocate News. We posted signs on the windows with #InThisTogether along with hearts in support of the Heart Hunters campaign, which is a movement that was started by a woman in Galesburg to promote social distancing that later turned into a regional scavenger hunt looking for hearts in windows.

Since April is National Humor Month, I thought I would throw in a little humor here. Sometimes you have two options – laugh or cry. I choose to laugh.

If the schools are closed for too long, the parents are going to find a vaccine before the scientists do.

It’s National Humor Month, except in Washington, where there is always something funny going on.

The curative power of laughter and its ability to relieve debilitating stress and burnout may indeed be one of the great medical discoveries of our times.

Have a great week!
