The Wilton softball and baseball programs hosted a Strike Out Cancer night June 28 in Wilton. Area breast cancer survivors, along with some who are currently fighting the disease, were honored before the game. In what were surely memorable moments, survivors took the field with varsity players, being announced along side them.
The night included special white and pink jerseys worn by Wilton athletes, which were later auctioned off. Other silent auction items were featured, with all funds raised being donated to Muscatine Radiology Group in order to fund mammograms for women who may not be able to afford them.
Note from AN editor Derek Sawvell: "Cancer is a disease that doesn't discriminate. It touches all our lives, as I'm sure there's not one of us who hasn't been touched by it in some way. We all have family, or know someone who has battled this awful disease. In this community, on that night, I saw strength. I saw fighters. I saw our true heroes. These women are our mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, etc. I hope all of you were able to take a moment on that night, as I did, to take a breath and soak it all in. What a memorable and glorius evening."
