Obit: Paul Hughes

    Paul E. Hughes, 91, of Durant, died on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 at Manor Care Utica Ridge in Davenport.

    Visitation was held on Monday, Dec. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Blue Grass, with a rosary to follow at 7 p.m.

    Funeral service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church. Anthony Hughes, Johnathan Hughes, MG Christopher Hughes, Matthew Hughes, Colton Hughes and Adam Budelier served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jennifer Needham and Jodi Stewart.

    Interment took place at the Walcott Cemetery in Walcott with Military Honors performed by the Durant American Legion.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew Catholic Church, Durant Ambulance or Fire or Camp Courageous in his memory.

    Paul was born on July 31, 1926 to Henry and Winifred (Kramer) Hughes in Elwood, Iowa. He graduated from Welton High School.

    Paul married Bernice M. Westerhof on Aug. 9, 1952 in Davenport.

    He served in the United States Army during World War II.

    Paul farmed in Cedar County, milking Holstein cows until his retirement in 1995.

    He was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Blue Grass and the Durant American Legion Post #430 in Durant.  He and Bernice enjoyed dancing.

    Paul is remembered by his wife Bernice; his daughter Susan (Rick) Needham of Walcott; his son Tim (Diana) Hughes of Durant; six grandchildren: Anthony, Matthew, Johnathan, Colton, Jennifer and Jodi; three great-granddaughters; his sisters: Madonna (George) Fuegen of Lamotte, Martha (Art) Walston of El Cajon, California and Irene (Don) Shepherd of San Diego, California.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy Ann Sullivan and his brother Patrick Hughes D.C.
