Marlin Raymond Hillyer, 78, of Bennett died Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Private services were held on Nov. 15 at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton, with Rev Ronald Lashmit officiating. Public graveside committal services with full military honors were held at Inland Cemetery, Bennett. A public gathering of family and friends was held in the Bennett American Legion Building following the graveside services.

Marlin was born on Aug. 16, 1941 in Cedar County, Iowa around the Lowden area. He was the son of Raymond William and Esther Martha Sieck Hillyer. He attended high school in Bennett and enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served his country for four years. Marlin was united in marriage to Patricia Ann Horstmann on April 15, 1961 in Davenport.

Marlin was a truck driver all of this life, logging more than 3 million accident-free miles.

Marlin was a member of the Bennett and Durant American Legions; the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Post 2537), a member of the Tipton Masonic Lodge, a past member of the Tipton Moose, a current member of the Teamsters Local and was serving as the commissioner of the Cedar County Veterans Commission.

Marlin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia, of Bennett; his son, David (Jeannie) Hillyer of Bennett; daughters, Deanna (Roger) Welch of Mechanicsville, Doreena Crock (Craig) of Tipton, Deborah (Tony) Howell of Muscatine; sister, Karen Tupper of Allegan, Michigan; brother, Vernon Hillyer of Tipton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Don Hillyer and his son-in-law, Dick Crock.
