Barbara Kathleen Freers was born on May 15, 1933 in Iowa City, to Margrette “Birdie” Freers of Muscatine. She was raised by her maternal grandmother Alice Mabel Dykes Freers and later adopted by her aunt and uncle Jennie (Freers) and Walter Schmidt. Throughout her life Barbara was blessed to have an abundance of aunts, uncles and cousins who also welcomed her into their families. Barbara had a strong faith and was a life-long member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/Community of Christ.

Barbara graduated from Muscatine High School in 1952 and was united in marriage to Harold W. “Sonny” Pace on March 22, 1953 at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Muscatine. She lived her entire married life farming, being a homemaker and raising her family on the same farm in the Sweetland area. Barbara was also a school bus driver for over 30 years with the Muscatine School District and had previously worked at the telephone office as a local operator. She was a long-time member of the Muscatine Garden Club.

Barbara was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed gardening, music, camping, fishing and watching barges navigate the Mississippi River. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband Harold W. “Sonny” Pace of Muscatine; daughters, Deboraha (Carroll) Howard of Muscatine and Sally (David) Sallee of Wilton; sons Tim (Konnie) Pace of Muscatine and Andrew Pace of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; and eight step great great-grandchildren.
