Damien J. Maynard Jr. was one of approximately 45 Iowa Army National Guard soldiers who were recently recognized during a patching ceremony held at the Camp Dodge Joint Maneuver Training Center in Johnston, Iowa.

The ceremony represents a time-honored tradition where Iowa citizen-soldiers officially receive the left-shoulder military patch representing their unit of assignment in the Iowa Army National Guard. It also marks completion of the Iowa National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits the education and skills needed to excel during their Army Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training (military school).

Damien, 19, of Wilton is the son of Natalie Bowman of Wilton. Damien is a 2017 graduate of Wilton High School. He enlisted in the National Guard in October of 2017 where he serves as a motor transport operator. “I joined the Iowa National Guard because I wanted to serve in the military and still go to college and I thought it would be the best way to do it,” said Damien. He is planning on graduating from the University of Iowa in 2021 with a degree in athletic training.
