Contracted employee dies after incident at Gerdau

A Muscatine man doing contracted work at the Gerdau Ameristeel plant in Wilton has died.

Eric Connor, 29, of Muscatine died on June 16 at Trinity Hospital, Rock Island. According to previous reports, Connor was a contracted employee working at Gerdau when an incident happened.

Connor was taken to Trinity Muscatine and was later transferred to Trinity Rock Island.

According to his obituary printed on page 7, Connor was a member of the local Painter’s Union #626 of Rock Island.

In a joint report by the Muscatine Journal and Quad-City Times, Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson said an autopsy was being completed but the results were pending. He confirmed in reports that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was also investigating.

The Advocate News contacted Gerdau and the company released the following statement, courtesy of Director of Communications & Public Affairs Adam Parr:

Gerdau confirms the passing of a contractor employee at the Wilton, IA steel mill. The individual was hospitalized on Saturday, June 15, and passed away shortly thereafter. We are currently in the process of investigating, and will supply additional details when we are able.

We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
