Bennett’s Rixe-Lausen American Legion Auxiliary Unit #104 is sponsoring a $500 Auxiliary Memorial Scholarship to provide financial aid for high school seniors from the Bennett Community School District. Legion Post #104 will also provide a $500 scholarship for a total of two $500 scholarships available locally.

Only one application needs to be completed for consideration for the two local scholarships. Deadline for the local Auxiliary/Legion scholarships is April 30.

The scholarship may be used to pursue any course of study at an educational institution that maintains a regular faculty and curriculum such as a college, university, nursing school, vocational or technical school, area community or junior college, business school or cosmetology school.

The applicant shall be a senior from the Bennett School District, attending any high school and shall complete an application form including an original essay on the topic “My Future in America.” The applicant shall possess the educational background to pursue educational goals and have the desire and ability to finish advanced education. The applicant need not be related to a veteran to apply for the local scholarships.

Established in 1987, the Bennett ALA Memorial Scholarship is made possible through memorial contributions given by families in the name of deceased members of the American Legion and Auxiliary or the Bennett community. These contributions and any donations received for serving funeral lunches are placed in a special fund and interest from the fund is used to provide the yearly scholarship.

Also available are Merit Awards at the First District and state level of the Iowa American Legion and Auxiliary. These scholarships require relationship to a veteran and attending an educational institution in the state of Iowa.

Applications are available from local guidance counselors or by contacting Jo Treadwell, Auxiliary scholarship chair at 886-6224. The applications can all be completed on a computer and then printed for submission to the appropriate person for consideration.
