The Wilton Chamber of Commerce held its first weekly farmer’s market in Elder Park on Thursday, May 31. Dozens of visitors enjoyed music, food, shopping and kids' activities provided by the Boy Scouts, 4-H club, Muscatine County Extension, Girl Scouts and the Wilton Fine Arts Guild. The Wilton American Legion Post #584 has a new drop box for retired flags. Located at the Legion building (215 Cherry Street), flags can be dropped off in order to be retired properly. Old flags can also be dropped off at City Hall or the Convenience Center. The Legion will host a flag retirement ceremony June 9.

Chair of the Community Foundation of Cedar County (CFCC) Dawn Smith presented recipients certificates of grant approval for the 2018 Grant Award Cycle at the Cedar County Courthouse basement on Wednesday, April 25. Recipients included: city of Durant for Cedar County radios; city of Durant for a Community Center modernization project; Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Durant for Family Movie Night in the Park; Inland Firefighters, Inc. for personal protective equipment in Bennett; Bennett Public Library for an afterschool/summer program and launchpads; Bennett Community School for the purchase of an automated external defibrillator (AED); Lutheran Services in Iowa Healthy Families America program for a new parent program in Cedar County; and Rape Victim Advocacy Program for sexual violence prevention in Cedar County. In total, the CFCC awarded $103,430 in funding for area organizations.

Trees Forever—Durant pre-school and fifth grade students planted 27 trees in the cities of Walcott and Durant on May 1. Emily Swihart of Trees Forever assisted fifth grade teacher Shari Meiers and EC teacher Mindy Hoon with the project. Above left, students can be seen planting the trees with the help of a DNR professional. Above right are the students who participated in the project. According to Hoon, they also applied for a grant to receive tree seedlings from Trees for Kids. The grant allowed them to receive 200 seedlings to give to students and their families. Students divided and wrapped the seedlings in order to take them home for Mother’s Day.

Customers, community leaders and employees from around the globe attended the Group Schumacher North America grand opening and open house in Durant on May 24. Construction on the new facility, located at 501 West Second Avenue, broke ground two years ago. Selina Schumacher, general manager of Schumacher Company LC, (above left) is shown addressing those in attendance. With the grand opening, the company reaching its 50th anniversary this year and another new facility opening in China next year, she said, “The foundation for further growth is poured.”

The Wilton Music Department presented their spring concert on Thursday, May 10 in the high school gymnasium. The concert featured the fifth and sixth grade bands and the junior high choir and band. Pictured are the fifth grade band, directed by Brad Miller. The junior high band is under the direction of Pete Wyatt.

In honor of Flag Day today, June 14, members of the Wilton American Legion Post 584 held their annual flag retirement on Saturday, June 9 behind the Legion building. A total of 518 flags were inspected and retired. The Legion also has a new drop box for retired flags. Located at the Legion building at 201 E. Railroad St. (across from the Depot), flags can be dropped off in order to be retired properly. Old flags can also be dropped off at City Hall or the Convenience Center. Wilton Legion members are shown putting flags in two burn barrels behind the Legion building.

With the recent removal of previous buildings and storage units at 618 W. Fifth St. in Wilton, progress is being made at the future site of Wilton Bank office of DeWitt Bank & Trust's new $2.8 million facility. According to DeWitt Bank & Trust President Greg Gannon, construction of the 9,270-foot banking facility should be complete by May 2019. Single Source Architects & Master Builders of Waterloo is serving as the general contractor for the project. Pictured above at the site (from left) include Wilton Mayor Bob Barrett, Wilton Development Corporation Director Becky Allgood, city council member Keith Stanley, Gannon, Wilton Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Eva Belitz, and Wilton Bank staff Julie Ford, Bill Vetter, Melissa Becker, Grant Lilienthal, Laura Kauffman, Kelly McKim and Ben Brown.
