The longest continuous Memorial Day commemoration west of the Mississippi River was held on Monday, during the 104th annual service at Historic Summit Church on Utica Ridge Road in Davenport. The event is sponsored by the Scott County Historical Society, the Carl Jacobsen Post #639 American Legion and Auxiliary of Eldridge, and the Edward W. Knapper Post #6174 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eldridge. During the service, the names of Scott County veterans from the Civil War through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were read aloud. The guest speaker was Maj. Gen. David Wilson, commanding general of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command at the Rock Island Arsenal. Following the service in the church, the crowd moved into the adjoining cemetery for a ceremony featuring a firing squad, the playing of taps, and a benediction by Pastor Pete Hoft of Park View Lutheran Church.
