Obituary: Virva Richard

Virva J. Richard, 90, of Bettendorf, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, in Davenport.

Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home in Bettendorf.  Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.  Those wishing to attend the services should meet at McGinnis-Chambers by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.  Memorials may be made to the Bettendorf Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9128.

Virva was born Oct. 21, 1928, on the family farm in Minnesota, the daughter of Emil & Goldie (Friesner) Arndt.  She was a graduate of Superior High School in Superior, Iowa, earning four letters in basketball and graduating third in her class.  On Sept. 14, 1947, she was united in marriage to Merle D. Richard in Estherville, Iowa.  He preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 2003.

Virva had retired from K & K Hardware in Bettendorf, where she had been bookkeeper for 30 years.  She had been actively involved with the Bettendorf VFW and the Bettendorf Senior Citizens Club, where she had been past-president and treasurer.

She had enjoyed dancing and playing cards in earlier years and will be remembered for her potato salad at many potlucks.

Those left to honor her memory include her sons, all Bettendorf High School graduates, Dan Richard of Arizona (BHS ’68), Jerry Richard of Bettendorf (BHS ’71), Allen (Sue) Richard of Waxahachie, Texas (BHS ’78) and John (Charlotte) Richard of LeClaire, (BHS ’82): ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to her husband, Merle, Virva was preceded in death by her parents; one sister and five brothers.
