Obituary: Robert Zesiger

A funeral service for Robert D. Zesiger, 95, of Davenport, was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, East Moline. Burial was in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation was Friday, Nov. 29, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the Runge Mortuary, Davenport.

Mr. Zesiger died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, at Ridgecrest Village, Davenport.

Robert Zesiger was born Dec. 14, 1923, in Davenport, the son of Elmer and Anna (Christenson) Zesiger. He earned a B.A. from The University of Iowa in 1950, and an M.S. degree in industrial education from Bradley University in 1953.

He served in the U.S. Army for two-and-a-half years during World War II, the last nine months in Luzon, Philippines. He later served during the Korean conflict for 10 months.

He married Barbara Joyce Strandgard in 1953 in Miami, Fla. They were married for nearly 45 years before she preceded him in death. He later married Margaret Kramer in 2005. She also preceded him in death.

He began his teaching career in industrial education in 1954 in Washington, Ill., and retired from United Township High School in 1988. Between 1959-1990, he built seven homes (sometimes with his father’s help) and remodeled 35 homes.    

He served as a Silvis alderman from 1997-2009.

Survivors include his children, Deborah (Rustin) Jackson, Denise (Cissy) Zesiger, Diane (Mark) Wadsworth, and Robert Zesiger II; his grandchildren, Amer Kauzlarich, Amanda Ludin, and Alexandria Logas; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Andrea Hastings; a sister, Jeanne Meyer; and a brother, Milton Zesiger.
