Obituary: Robert Staib

A funeral service for Robert Burns Staib, 98, of Davenport, was held at noon on Friday, Nov. 15, in the Runge Mortuary, Davenport. Visitation was two hours prior to the service on Friday at the mortuary. Burial was at 1 p.m. Friday at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery.

Mr. Staib died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019, in Lake Wales, Fla.

Robert Staib was born May 7, 1921, in Monongahela, Penn., the son of Frank and Dorothy (Rearick) Staib. He graduated from Monongahela High School in 1939. He graduated from Carnegie Tech and attended Officer Candidate School.

He served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the Signal Corps throughout Europe, including the Battle of Normandy. He received the Purple Heart and the Legion D’Honneur, the highest decoration in France.

He married Virginia Kerr in 1940 in Pittsburgh, Penn. She died in 1998.

He worked for Ohio Edison from 1946 until his retirement in 1983.

He was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church, an Army reservist until 1952, and a member of the Scottish Rite order of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Staib, Bettendorf; a son, Robert (Virginia) Staib Jr., Lake Wales; his grandchildren, William (Jennifer) Staib and James (Ellen) Staib; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his longtime partner, Anna (Stahl) Miller.
