Obituary: Robert Beckman

A funeral service for Robert “Bob” Beckman, 85, of Davenport, was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation was one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport. The Runge Mortuary, Davenport, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Beckman died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019.

Robert Beckman was born in 1934, the son of Rudolph and Edith Beckman. He received his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from The University of Iowa in 1956.

He served in the U.S. Army and served in the medical unit at a Nike missile site in West Haven, Conn., and was later stationed at Camp McCoy, near Sparta, Wis.

He was married to his wife, the former Linda Leitzke, for 56 years.

He worked as a pharmacist for over 50 years, starting at Walgreen’s in Council Bluffs and Cedar Falls. He became co-owner of Rockingham Drugstore in Davenport in 1968. He later became pharmacy manager at the Rockingham Hy-Vee.

He was an active member of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school for over 40 years and also taught Confirmation classes. He was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Boy Scouts of America, the Fraternal Order of Masons, and the American Pharmaceutical Association.

His hobbies were watching sports, researching family history, traveling, writing, games, reading, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Laura (Roy) McKinstry of Michigan; a son, Bruce Beckman, Davenport; his grandsons, Andrew Crowell and Ian McKinstry; a sister, Mary Ann Weisenborn of Illinois; and a sister-in-law, Sandra Logan of Tennessee.

Memorials may be made to the General Fund/Youth at St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church.
