Obituary: Rev. Raymond Hampton

A funeral service for the Rev. Dr. Raymond G. Hampton, 78, of Story City, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Grace United Methodist Church, Story City. Burial will be in the Story City Municipal Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 5, from 5-7 p.m. at the church. The Adams Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Dr. Hampton died Friday, Nov. 29, 2019, at Mary Greeley Hospital, Ames.

Raymond Hampton was born July 15, 1941, in Chicago, the son of George and Ethel (Hawkins) Hampton. He grew up in Bensenville, Ill., and graduated from Fenton High School in 1959. He later graduated from Moody Bible Institute, Wheaton College, and Fuller Theological Seminary. In 1991, he completed his doctorate of ministry degree from Drew University.

He married Rhonda Hammer on June 1, 1968.

He was a member of the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church for 41 years. His pastorates included United Methodist Churches in Estherville (1967-1968), Sergeant Bluff and Salix (1968-1976), Eldridge (1976-1983), Alden and Popejoy (1983-1987), Story City Grace (1987-1995), Albia Trinity (1995-2002), and Cherokee St. Paul (2002-2007). He retired from formal ministry in 2007.

His hobbies were traveling, playing the organ for worship at Grace Church, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife; his daughters, Joy (Rev. Chad Lierman), Ida Grove, Susan (Roger Parker), Story City, Mary (Lee Rainwater), Versailles, Ky., and Krista (Chris) Taylor, North Africa; his grandchildren, Colin, Daniel (Zoey), Leah (Stephen), Rebecca, Pressly, Carson, Lindsay, Ashley (Johnny), Caleb, Samuel, Shyanne, Bryna, Cayle, Jaydon, Anyka, Mayah, and Raymond; three great-granddaughters; and a brother, Gerald, Hampton, Ga.
