Obituary: Raymond Smith

A funeral service for Raymond D. Smith, 91, of Davenport, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Grace Lutheran Church, Davenport. Visitation was one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. Burial was in Krell Cemetery, rural Muscatine. The Runge Mortuary, Davenport, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Smith died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, in Davenport.

Raymond Smith was born Sept. 16, 1927, in Letts, Iowa, the son of Daniel and Ruth (Pratt) Smith. He graduated from Chillicothe Business College.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He married Barbara Batchelor on Oct. 15, 1950, in rural Muscatine. She died Jan. 13, 2017.

He was employed at Caterpillar as an accountant.

He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he volunteered as church treasurer, and served on the board of CEFCU.

His hobbies were sports, flower gardening, shooting pool, playing cards, and travel.

Survivors include his children, Elizabeth Sanderson of South Dakota, Daniel (Mary Kate) Smith of New Jersey, Susan (James) McDonough, and Joseph (Mary Ellen) Smith, all of Chicago; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Margaret.
