Obituary: Raymond Cheely

A funeral service for Raymond Cheely, 78, of Eldridge, was held at noon on Friday, May 31, in the Runge Mortuary Chapel. Burial was in Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation was Thursday, May 30, from 5-8 p.m. at the mortuary.

Mr. Cheely died Saturday, May 25, 2019.

Raymond Cheely was born Nov. 7, 1940, in Burlington, the son of Francis and Dorothy (Stewart) Cheely.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1993, serving both active duty and reserves.

He married Virginia Hoxie on Nov. 8, 1963.  She died in 2001. He later married Cheri Hamilton.

He retired from Alcoa after 33 years of service. He created the Welders Apprenticeship Program at Alcoa.

His hobbies were being outdoors, bow hunting, fishing, and riding motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife Cheri; his children, Earl (Lori) Smith, Gregory (Judith) Smith, Rick Cheely, Patricia Husbands, Shannon (Jack) Hansen, and Michelle Harbst; his grandchildren, Jennifer Shubeck, Stephen Schubeck, Ryan Husbands, Korynne Smith, Jamie Smith, and Raymond Smith; and his siblings, Rhonda (Bill) Bendt, Gary (Susan) Sivertsen, and Bill Derby.

In addition to his wife Virginia, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy; a son, Rusty; and a sister, Patricia.
